Around 5:30 p.m. on May 16, 1977, a normal Monday evening in New York City turned into a deadly disaster.
David Tumi, a 39-year-old lawyer, was waiting outside the Pan-Am Building in Midtown Manhattan. He was preparing to take a helicopter to the airport. The service was expensive, but it was designed for passengers who wanted to avoid the city’s traffic and reach the airport quickly.
Tumi was already worried about being late for his flight. He had no idea that the helicopter waiting above him was about to become the center of a tragedy that would change helicopter operations in New York City.
At the same time, Anne Barnett was standing at a nearby bus stop. She was waiting for a bus home to the Bronx.
Within minutes, both of their ordinary commutes would become part of one of New York’s most shocking aviation accidents.
David Tumi Was Waiting for a Helicopter to the Airport
David Tumi had arrived at the Pan-Am Building during the evening rush hour. He was in a hurry because he had a flight to catch.
The helicopter service operating from the building was intended to save passengers time. Instead of traveling through Manhattan traffic by road or taking public transportation, passengers could pay more for a direct helicopter trip to the airport.
For people who could afford it, the service was an attractive option.
The helicopter had arrived at the rooftop landing area, and passengers who had been on board were getting off. Tumi and the other waiting passengers prepared to board.
As he waited, Tumi briefly looked up at the sky.
It would be one of his final moments outside.
The Helicopter Was Still Running
The helicopter was not shut down while passengers changed.
The practice saved time. The operator wanted the aircraft ready to leave as soon as passengers had boarded.
But keeping a helicopter running while people were getting on and off also meant that its machinery was under continuous stress.

Metal and Glass Fell Onto the Streets
Some of the broken rotor pieces went over the edge of the building.
The Pan-Am Building was a 59-story skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan. As the debris fell, it struck windows and other parts of the building.
Glass shattered from the impact.
Metal fragments and pieces of the helicopter continued toward the crowded streets below.
People on the ground had little warning.
Anne Barnett Was Caught in the Debris
Nearby, Anne Barnett was waiting at a bus stop.
She was surrounded by the normal rush-hour crowd. People were leaving work, heading home and moving through the busy streets.
Then she heard a series of strange and frightening noises.
There was a loud boom, followed by sharp cracking sounds and the roar of breaking glass.
People began running.
Barnett instinctively raised her arms to protect her head.
But the falling debris reached the street almost immediately.
She was struck and killed by a piece of the helicopter.
Barnett became the fifth fatality in the accident.
Why the Accident Was So Dangerous
