On the midday of June 1st, 2018, 36-year-old Luis Garcia made his way into Mexico City to link up with his elder sibling. The two of them were extremely tight-knit. They had endured a great deal together. When Luis was 14 and his brother was 15, their guardians had undergone a very chaotic separation. And during that time, their father had simply abandoned them, and they never encountered him again. Shortly after, their mother wed again, and her new spouse moved in with the household. Not long after that, their mother simply disappeared.
The boys questioned their stepfather, asking, “Where is she? Where did she go?” But the stepfather replied, “I don’t know. She left on a chore and never returned.” The boys were highly doubtful of their stepfather, as this did not feel like something their mother would do—she would never desert them. But just a few days after she vanished, the stepfather also disappeared. Suddenly, these adolescent boys were left to survive independently.
The boys contacted authorities, stating, “We believe something happened to our mom. We suspect our stepfather might be involved, but everyone’s left us.” The police initiated an inquiry and attempted to locate their mother, but they were unable to find her, the stepfather, or their biological father. Eventually, after the investigation was closed, the two brothers—now essentially parentless—learned to look after themselves, but they never ceased trying to find their mother. For almost twenty years, they scoured Mexico City in hopes of answers, but they never found any real resolution. They simply didn’t know what had become of her.
On this particular day, the brothers had come together not to search for their mother, but to return to their childhood residence. After being abandoned by their parents and stepfather, they had continued to live in that house alone, managing on their own. They had matured there. Eventually, once they were old enough, they moved out and started their independent lives, but they had never sold the house. They had simply held onto it.
Now, they had returned to sort through it, clean it up, and possibly make some renovations, maybe even prepare it for sale. They weren’t certain. The brothers entered the house, where old photographs still adorned the walls—family portraits that triggered a flood of memories, many of which were painful and distressing. Still, the brothers enjoyed taking a trip down memory lane.
At some point, they decided not only to clean out the house but also to carry out basic repairs—the place had been neglected for years. They agreed to restore it. Over the next few days, they contacted some workers to begin small renovations, while the brothers continued cleaning and packing.
One day, while a group of workers was renovating the main bedroom, the brothers were in the living area when they heard a loud disturbance coming from the master suite. One of the workers shouted for them to come quickly and see what he had uncovered. The brothers rushed into the bedroom and saw something lying on the floor. At first, they couldn’t even tell what it was. But after the worker collected himself, he explained—and suddenly the brothers realized what had happened to their mother.
It turned out they had been right all along. Their mother hadn’t just walked away from her children. On the day she went missing, she had been tied up, muzzled, and stuffed into the wall of their family house.
This was discovered when, during renovations two decades later, a worker’s hammer broke into a section of the master bedroom wall. When he pulled it back, a white item fell out—and it was their mother’s skull. After removing more of the wall, they found her entire skeleton, still clearly bound and gagged.
Perhaps the most chilling detail: inside the wall were visible scratch marks, indicating she had still been alive when she was sealed inside. She had been desperately trying to signal for help—but no one heard her.
Following this gruesome revelation, the brothers went to the local authorities and reported what had occurred. The police arrived, searched the house, and tried to determine what happened and who was responsible—but they were unable to solve the mystery.
Investigators always believed the stepfather was likely involved, especially since he had also gone missing days after their mother. But he was never found—and likely never will be—since he would be well over ninety today and is almost certainly already deceased.
