The Disappearance of Armando Nájera
On April 21, 1996, Carolina Suarez arrived at her family’s wooded property about an hour outside Paris, France, for a large family picnic. Dozens of relatives were already eating, talking and dancing in the backyard.
But one person was missing.
Carolina’s fiancé, Armando Nájera, was supposed to arrive before the picnic. Earlier that morning, he had told Carolina that he was going to the woods with her cousin, João Soares, to collect firewood.
When Carolina found João at the picnic, however, Armando was nowhere to be seen.
Carolina asked João where Armando had gone. His answer immediately confused her. João said he had not seen Armando that day and did not know what she was talking about.
At first, Carolina wondered if she had misunderstood Armando that morning. But she was certain about what he had told her.
She waited throughout the picnic, expecting Armando to eventually appear. He never did.
Armando Was Already Acting Nervous
Before his disappearance, Armando had been behaving differently.
Carolina had noticed that he seemed distant and nervous. She wondered if he was having doubts about their upcoming wedding.
But when Carolina returned to their apartment that evening, Armando was not there.
She became increasingly worried and began calling people who knew him.
One of those people was Armando’s friend, Manuel Frightus.
Manuel told Carolina that he had met Armando for coffee earlier that morning. Armando had appeared extremely nervous. He was sweating, tapping his feet and repeatedly looking around.
According to Manuel, Armando had said that he had accidentally uncovered a secret.
That detail changed the situation. Armando’s behavior suddenly seemed more serious than ordinary wedding nerves.
Police Search for the Missing Man
A few days later, Carolina and Manuel reported Armando missing to the Paris police.
Captain Jean Paul Copetti interviewed Carolina, Manuel and members of the Suarez family. Nobody had seen Armando since the day of the picnic.
The police had very little evidence.
Armando was believed to have been heading to the Suarez family’s property, so officers searched the house and surrounding woods. They found nothing.
The backyard where the family picnic had taken place looked completely ordinary. There was grass, trees and nothing obvious that suggested a crime.
The police continued searching, but the case produced no clear evidence of foul play.
Did Armando Run Away?
With no body and no obvious evidence of a crime, Captain Copetti began considering another possibility.
Perhaps Armando had left voluntarily.
There were several reasons why this seemed possible.
First, Carolina had said that Armando had recently appeared nervous about their wedding. Maybe he had decided that he did not want to get married.
Second, there was the strange secret Armando had mentioned to Manuel.
The neighborhood where Armando and Carolina lived was known for criminal activity. Copetti wondered whether Armando had accidentally discovered something dangerous and decided to disappear to protect himself.
Police also learned that Armando had relatives in Portugal. If he had intentionally left France, Portugal seemed like a possible destination.
French police could not simply operate there, so Copetti sent an alert to Portuguese authorities.
But no call came.
Months passed, and Armando remained missing.
A Murder in Amsterdam Reveals a Connection
Almost a year later, in April 1997, Captain Copetti received unexpected information.
A detective investigating another case came into his office with a file about a man named Jose Martins.
Jose’s body had been found in Amsterdam. Investigators identified him as a resident of Paris.
Copetti initially did not understand what Jose’s murder had to do with Armando.
Then he saw the list of Jose’s friends and associates.
One name immediately stood out.
Manuel Frightus.
He was the same friend who had told Carolina that Armando had uncovered a secret.
The connection prompted police to locate Manuel.
Manuel Says He Could Become the Fourth Victim
When police finally found Manuel, he was behaving nervously.
Investigators had spent several days trying to locate him. He had not been staying at his known addresses, and police repeatedly arrived after he had already left.
During questioning, Copetti asked Manuel why he had been avoiding the police.
Manuel said he was scared.
Then he made a startling statement.
He said he did not want to become the fourth victim.
Copetti was confused. At that point, investigators knew about only two apparent victims: Armando, who was missing, and Jose, who had been found dead.
Manuel then described another killing that had happened years earlier in Portugal.
As he explained what had happened, investigators began connecting the cases.
The Secret Armando Had Discovered
The truth was connected to a murder committed in Portugal in 1994.
According to Manuel’s account, three young hitmen had been hired to kill a man in Portugal. After the murder, the three men agreed to keep the crime secret.
But one of them eventually broke that agreement.
That man was Jose Martins.
Jose could not live with what had happened. He eventually confessed the story to his friend, Armando.
Armando was horrified by what he learned.
There was an even more disturbing part of the secret.
One of the three people involved in the Portuguese murder was João Soares, Carolina’s cousin.
That meant Armando had discovered that someone from his own future wife’s family was allegedly involved in a serious murder.
How Armando Was Killed
According to the account described in the case, João realized that Armando now knew about the murder.
If Armando talked, the secret could be exposed.
On the morning of the family picnic, João picked up Armando in his car. The explanation was that they were going into the woods to collect firewood before the rest of the family arrived.
But the trip had a different purpose.
Two of João’s associates were reportedly waiting in the woods. One was also connected to the 1994 murder in Portugal.
When Armando got out of the car, the group attacked him and killed him.
They then took his body to the backyard of the Suarez family’s property.
There, they buried him.
The Picnic Took Place Over Armando’s Grave
The most disturbing part of the case came from what happened next.
After Armando was buried, a blanket was reportedly placed over the area.
Hours later, the Suarez family arrived for their annual picnic.
Carolina was there.
Her relatives were there.
People ate, talked and enjoyed the afternoon in the same backyard where Armando had been buried only hours earlier.
According to the account, the family was literally having its picnic only a few feet above his grave.
This also explained why the police search had failed to find him. The property looked ordinary, and investigators had no reason at first to believe that Armando’s body was buried directly beneath the area where the family had gathered.
What Happened to the Suspects?
The case remained unresolved for years.
In 2009, João Soares and two other men were found guilty of Armando’s murder.
Because so much time had passed since the crime, each received a prison sentence of between eight and ten years.
The men were also investigated in connection with the murder of Jose Martins.
However, nobody was charged with Jose’s murder, and that case remained officially unsolved.
The Mystery of Armando’s Disappearance
Armando’s disappearance initially looked like a case of a man abandoning his wedding or secretly leaving the country.
His nervous behavior, the unexplained secret and his family connection to Portugal all seemed to support several possible explanations.
But the later connection between Manuel, Jose Martins and the Portuguese murder changed the entire case.
Armando had not simply disappeared.
According to the account, he had learned about a deadly secret and was killed because he knew too much.
The most chilling detail was that his body had been hidden in the very place where his own fiancée and her family gathered for their annual picnic.
For almost a year, the answer to Armando’s disappearance was sitting beneath the surface of the Suarez family’s backyard.
And the murder of Jose Martins, the man who had reportedly revealed the secret to Armando, remained officially unsolved.
