Just before sunset in June 1997, 31-year-old Nasiruddin was riding a horse through a dangerous mountain pass in northern Pakistan. A snowstorm had reduced visibility, the trail was icy, and steep drops made every step dangerous.
He was traveling with his younger brother, Kathiruddin. The brothers had been forced to leave their village after becoming involved in a violent feud with neighbors. They were using remote mountain routes because they could no longer safely travel along the main roads.
Then a gunshot rang out.
A bullet passed close to Nasir’s head. The brothers had been found.
Nasir raced toward what appeared to be a cave in the mountainside. He believed it could protect him from the gunfire. But when he reached the entrance, his horse suddenly refused to go inside.
Nasir entered anyway.
His brother never saw him come back out.
What followed became a mystery that lasted almost three decades.
Why Were Nasiruddin and His Brother in the Mountains?
Nasir Rudin and his younger brother, Kathir, were trying to escape a violent dispute with their neighbors.
The situation had become serious enough that the brothers were forced to evacuate their village. They also avoided the main roads because they feared being seen.
Instead, they traveled through a dangerous mountain pass on horseback.
The journey was already difficult. The trail was narrow and icy, the mountains had steep drop-offs, and a snowstorm had begun. Sunset was also approaching, which meant temperatures would soon fall sharply and traveling in darkness would become even more dangerous.
Then the shooting started.
Nasiruddin Runs Toward a Cave
As bullets began flying around them, Nasir searched for somewhere to hide.
He spotted what looked like a cave in the cliff face. It appeared to be their best chance of surviving the attack.
Nasir shouted for Kathir to follow him, but the wind, snow and gunfire made it difficult to know whether his brother had heard him.
Nasir pushed his horse toward the cave.
When he reached the entrance, the horse suddenly stopped and refused to enter. Nasir got off, grabbed the reins and pulled the animal inside.
He then turned around.
Kathir was not there.
Outside, the snow was blowing heavily and gunshots could still be heard. Nasir considered going back for his brother, but leaving the cave could expose him to the attackers.
So he waited.
The Strange Blue Glow Inside the Cave
While Nasir was inside, something strange caught his attention.
The walls and ceiling appeared to glow with an intense blue light. The sight was so unusual that Nasir became distracted by it.
The cave did not look like an ordinary rock cave.
For a moment, he simply stood there trying to understand what he was seeing.
But the gunfire outside eventually brought his attention back to the danger.
Nasir decided he needed to find his brother.
He took a couple of steps toward the entrance.
Then the floor disappeared beneath him.
Kathir Could Not Find His Brother
While Nasir was inside the cave, Kathir had found another hiding place.
He was crouched behind some rocks with his horse lying beside him. From there, he could see the cave entrance.
Kathir had watched Nasir enter the cave, but he could not follow because of the gunfire.
He stayed behind the rocks until darkness fell.
After the shooting stopped, Kathir finally approached the cave. He pulled his horse inside and discovered something that made no sense.
The cave was completely dark.
And Nasir was gone.
There Was Nowhere for Nasir to Go
Kathir searched the cave by touch.
It was small and appeared to have no other exit. There was no sign of Nasir or his horse.
That made the disappearance even more confusing.
Kathir had been watching the entrance from his hiding place. He never saw Nasir leave.
There was only one apparent way in or out.
Yet Nasir was nowhere to be found.
Because it was too cold and dark to continue searching, Kathir left for a nearby village.
The following morning, he returned.
He searched the cave again in daylight and spent hours looking around the area. But there was still no sign of his brother.
Eventually, Kathir returned to the village to gather family members and friends for a larger search.
The searches failed.
Over time, the family was forced to assume that Nasir had died somewhere in the mountains.
The Cave Disappeared
About six months later, Kathir returned to the mountain pass.
He wanted to say funeral prayers for his missing brother.
But when he reached the location, something even stranger had happened.
The cave was gone.
At first, Kathir thought he had simply mistaken the location. He searched up and down the ridge but could not find it.
This was difficult to explain because he and his family had visited the cave several times during their earlier searches.
They knew where it had been.
Now there was nothing there.
The mystery remained unresolved for years.
Nasiruddin Was Found 28 Years Later
Nearly three decades passed.
Then, in August 2025, Kathir and his family received a call from local police.
A shepherd had been grazing livestock in a nearby valley when he discovered human remains on the ground.
An identification document found with the remains confirmed that the body belonged to Nasiruddin.
But the condition of the body created another mystery.
Despite Nasir having disappeared almost 30 years earlier, his body was remarkably well preserved.
His clothes were still intact, and the body showed little of the expected deterioration. He also appeared to be the same age as when he disappeared.
It seemed as though his body had been preserved for decades.
And that turned out to be close to the truth.
What Really Happened to Nasiruddin?
The explanation was hidden in the nature of the cave itself.
The cave was not actually a normal rock cave.
It was an ice cave located on the side of a massive glacier.
That also explained the strange blue glow Nasir had seen. Light passing through the ice gave the cave its unusual appearance.
Inside the cave was a dangerous crack in the ice.
The opening was covered by snow, making it difficult to see.
When Nasir stepped onto the area, he fell through the concealed crevasse.
The fall was sudden, and he likely had little opportunity to react.
Snow then collapsed over the opening, covering the crevasse and trapping him inside the glacier.
Why Was Nasir Never Found?
Nasir’s body was not simply lying inside the cave.
He had fallen into a deep crack within the glacier.
Snow covered the opening, hiding him from anyone searching above.
That explains why repeated searches failed to find him.
It also explains why Kathir could not see where his brother had gone.
From the outside, the cave looked like a small enclosed space. But underneath it was a hidden section of ice containing the crevasse.
Why Did the Cave Disappear?
The disappearance of the cave also has a natural explanation.
After Nasir died, the glacier continued to change.
The upper section eventually melted enough for the cave entrance to disappear. The deeper ice, however, remained intact.
That meant Nasir’s body could remain frozen deep inside the glacier even though the visible cave was gone.
Years later, continued melting eventually released the remains.
A local shepherd then discovered the body in 2025.
What Happened to Nasiruddin’s Horse?
The fate of Nasir’s horse remains unknown.
According to the transcript, the horse was never found.
This leaves one part of the 1997 mystery unanswered.
