A strange story from 17th-century Prague tells of a soldier named Jan who entered a church hoping to steal its gold. Instead, according to the legend, he became trapped by a statue of the Virgin Mary and lost his arm.
The story has survived for about 400 years. Even more disturbing, the tale claims that the severed arm was preserved and displayed inside the church as a warning to anyone else who might try to steal from it.
But did a religious statue really come to life and grab a thief?
No one can say for certain. The story has been passed down for centuries, and there are several possible explanations for what happened.
The Soldier Who Planned to Rob a Church
The story takes place in Prague in the winter of 1620.
A soldier named Jan was serving in an army fighting for the Habsburg Empire. The army had recently captured Prague after a major battle, and soldiers were preparing to leave the city.
Jan, however, wanted something more than his regular pay.
He had heard that a particular church contained valuable objects made of gold and other precious materials. Unlike many buildings in the city, the church had apparently escaped being looted.
The reason may have been simple. It was a sacred building, and even soldiers involved in the fighting had left it alone.
Jan decided to take advantage of that.
Earlier in the day, he reportedly entered the church while pretending to be a worshipper. While inside, he looked around and confirmed that the rumors were true.
There were valuable objects throughout the church.
Gold decorations, gilded furniture and jewelry left as offerings were all within reach. But one object caught Jan’s attention more than anything else.
It was a large statue of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus.
Around Mary’s neck was a large gold chain.
That was what Jan wanted.
Jan Hid Inside the Church
Jan knew he could not simply walk into the church and steal the chain while people were there.
So he came up with a plan.
He hid inside the church and waited for the people responsible for looking after the building to leave.
He remained hidden for hours.
The hiding place was dark and cramped. Jan had to stay there quietly while his legs gradually became numb.

According to the story, Jan reached toward the gold chain.

The Virgin Mary Had Allegedly Grabbed Him
The next morning, a priest entered the church to prepare for the morning service.
As he walked toward the front of the church, he suddenly stopped.
A man was hanging from the statue of the Virgin Mary.
The man was kicking his legs and begging for help.
It was Jan.
The priest rushed toward him, apparently expecting to find a man who had fallen or become trapped.
But what he saw was far stranger.
According to the legend, the Virgin Mary’s hand, which had previously been resting near the baby Jesus, was now wrapped around Jan’s arm.
It appeared as though the statue itself had grabbed him.
Jan could not free himself.
The priest tried to pull him away, but the hand would not release him.
The more they tried, the more impossible the situation seemed.
Jan’s Arm Was Cut Off
Eventually, the people trying to rescue Jan faced a terrible choice.
According to the story, they could not free his arm from the statue.
So they cut his arm off at the elbow.
The moment his arm was severed, the statue’s grip reportedly relaxed.
Jan was finally free.
But he had lost his arm.
The authorities then arrested him for attempting to steal from the church.
He was sent to prison.
The Thief Later Became a Monk
The strange incident reportedly changed Jan’s life.
After being released from prison, he did not return to his former life as a soldier.
Instead, according to the story, he entered a monastery and became a monk.
The experience had apparently convinced him to change his life completely.
Whether the story is historically accurate or has been altered through centuries of retelling is another question.
Did the Statue Really Grab Him?
This is where the story becomes difficult to separate from legend.
The incident supposedly happened around 400 years ago. There is no way today to independently verify exactly what happened inside that church that night.
There are at least two possible explanations.
A Religious Miracle
The traditional version is that the statue somehow came to life.
According to this explanation, Jan attempted to steal the Virgin Mary’s necklace, and the statue grabbed him by the arm.
The incident was then interpreted as an act of divine punishment or protection.
For believers, the story could be seen as a warning against stealing from a sacred place.
A Physical Accident
There is also a much more ordinary possibility.
Jan was climbing a large statue or the structure surrounding it. He may have slipped, fallen or somehow caught his arm on part of the statue.
In the darkness, he could have become trapped.
The priest and others may have been unable to free him and eventually decided that cutting off his arm was the only way to get him down.
That explanation would make the story frightening, but not supernatural.
The Severed Arm Became Part of the Legend
The strangest part of the story did not end with Jan’s escape.
According to accounts of the legend, his severed arm was preserved.
It was reportedly hung near the entrance of the church.
The purpose was clear: to discourage other thieves.
Anyone entering the church would see the withered arm and be reminded of what supposedly happened to Jan.
Whether the preserved arm is genuinely connected to the original incident is difficult to establish. But its presence became an important part of the story.
A Warning That Survived for Centuries
The story of Jan combines several elements that have helped it survive for generations.
There is a soldier, a church full of valuables, a secret nighttime robbery and a mysterious statue. Then comes the shocking punishment: the thief allegedly loses his arm while attempting to steal a sacred object.
The final detail makes the story even more memorable.
A severed arm displayed inside a church is difficult to forget.
Whether Jan was the victim of a supernatural event or a tragic accident, the legend carries a simple warning.
Stealing has consequences.
And in this particular story, the consequences were far more severe than Jan could ever have expected when he first hid inside the church.
The Mystery Remains
We may never know exactly what happened to Jan that winter night in Prague.
Maybe the statue really did grab him.
Maybe he became trapped while climbing toward the gold chain.
Or perhaps the original event was real but became more dramatic as the story was repeated over generations.
What can be said with more certainty is that the story of the one-armed thief became part of the church’s history and folklore.
Four centuries later, it still raises the same question:
Was Jan punished by a miracle, or was he simply caught in a terrible accident?
