Kyle Decides to Swim to the Dock

Dock Spiders Can Walk on Water
These spiders have specialized legs that help them stay on the surface of the water.
They can move across the surface instead of sinking.
Some species can even leap onto the water and continue moving across it.
That makes it possible for them to travel between pieces of floating vegetation, shoreline areas, and structures such as docks.
They Can Also Stay Underwater
Dock spiders have another unusual ability.
They can remain underwater for extended periods by trapping air around their bodies.
This helps them avoid predators and hunt prey.
For the boys at the camp, that meant jumping into the lake wasn’t necessarily enough to escape them.
The spiders could move through the water too.
The Real Reason the Camp Kept the Dock Closed
The boys eventually learned the truth from a camp counselor.
The faraway dock wasn’t off limits because of a secret tunnel.
It wasn’t hiding a mysterious underwater structure.
And the main danger wasn’t a rotting dock.
